engineering & manufacturing of a thrust reverser for jet aircraft
Servicing customers in the aerospace industry requires the ability to deliver the highest levels of quality and comply with very stringent requirements and standards. That is exactly what was needed to complete the project highlighted here.
Thrust reversers are a key feature in modern jet aircraft and facilitate faster deceleration and allow for the use of shorter runways. For the commercial airline industry, thrust reversers are also considered an important safety feature. The thrust reverser shown here was designed for use in a series of MacDonald Douglas aircraft (MD-80, 87, & 88). The MD series is a workhorse for many airlines, and since MacDonald Douglas built almost 1200, the availability of quality spare parts is critical.
It goes without saying that to slow down a 150,000 lb. $50 million aircraft moving at 120 knots requires a system with robust features. At Westfield Hydraulics, we specialize in engineering and manufacturing precision hydraulic systems for virtually any requirement. This product required various manufacturing processes and the combination of many materials into each of the 400+ assemblies we manufactured.
Composed of high strength alloys, an aluminum housing, steel, and stainless steel components, creating this product called for a number of high precision machining and finishing operations. The machining phase called into use our high precision milling, turning, and grinding capabilities, as well as the use of lapping plates. Dimensional accuracy was verified throughout the manufacturing process through the use of CMM inspections. Machined parts and components also required various plating applications; these included electroless nickel plating, passivation, and anodizing. There was also an electrical aspect of the project that required winding of solenoid coils and soldering. All of these processes were completed in-house, providing this customer with a simplified solution for their manufacturing requirements. This project also helped to solidify the positive relationship that we have cultivated with this customer.
The overriding factor in our success as a manufacturer is a deep commitment to quality. We operate an ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100 certified facility, and hold an FAA Repair Certificate. To learn more about this project or the processes use to create it, contact us directly.
